I’m a big fan of Twitter. I stay active on their app more than any other social media today. The app is so beautifully designed to encourage us to pursue our desire to open up, speak what’s on our mind and amplify our message. Today’s edition will break down and see what makes Twitter a thriving community.

Practicing Give before you take.

The biggest motivation behind a user joining Twitter is to amplify the message. I have something to say, and I want more people to hear it. What twitter does well is when you signup for the first time, they show a list of people to follow to get started. If you look at this as a product onboarding, this process is meant to help Twitter generate some feed for you. But if we look at this as a member onboarding into a new community, this flow reflects the culture of giving before you take. Before you begin your journey as a creator who wants to amplify your voice, you follow others and be a part of their amplification journey.

The other exciting thing is that Twitter doesn’t just show any random profiles to follow. But programmatically offers you the profiles of active members. You watch them play, learn and find your inspiration.

A clear focus on member progression

Member Goal: Grow the number of followers → Amplify the message.

Once the community understands what the members want to do, it is about using the technology to make that happen. You measure your member’s progression as what they are on day one vs. what they become on days 10, 20, and 100. The more followers one has, the more chances of the message spreading to more people.

But for this follower count to increase, they built a discovery engine that relies upon user actions. Unlike Facebook, which heavily relied upon your existing network, Twitter used a combination of user actions (likes, retweets, spaces) and the message in itself to help you find more reach.

Everything that they have built-in the product aligns with the members' goals. Every action they designed helped people find their message delivered to more people. And when it happens, to measure the success of the member progression, you can look at the number of followers you gained after 100 days. A quantitative measurement of success is designed. And also, it’s transparent visible to both the members of the community as well the host themselves.

There’s much more the application has done beautifully that inspires us every day in the journey of building habitate.io. The keytake away is to identify your members goal as early as you can and mesaure the success of your community in terms of their success.
